New Delhi: “Charging high fares in the name of special trains should be stopped. 100% train service should be brought immediately,” DMK member in the Rajya Sabha Kanimozhi NVN Somu insisted.
DMK member Kanimozhi NVN Somu spoke under special attention in the Rajya Sabha: “The railway sector is intertwined with the lives of the grassroots of India. They mostly depend on trains for their travel. The railway department, which has canceled many regular trains during the Corona period, has also suspended fare concessions for senior citizens and differently-abled persons.
Apart from this, 53 categories such as athletes, cancer sufferers and journalists have been suspended.
Some categories have been given fee concessions. However, steps should be taken to restore this privilege to all the sections deprived of the privilege.
70% of the currently running trains are run as special trains and are charged extra while the full train service is yet to resume after the Corona period. This puts a huge burden on poor people even when traveling short distances.
Therefore, 100 percent train service should be brought immediately. High fares charged on special trains should be stopped. At least steps should be taken to reduce the fare hike significantly,” he asserted.
